Poverty of Spirit = Happiness

In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus gives us several ways to be happy. Matthew 5 opens up with a string of, “Blessed are… the poor in spirit, the meek, the merciful, the peacemakers…” It is interesting that the Greek word for blessed is “makarios” which literally means “happy” (Makar is the Greek word for happy).
